The Spanish Civil War of 1936 was an opportunity for Hitler to test out his new Nazi War machine in action. Hitler tested weapons and military strategies while also seeing how the rest of the world powers would react to fascist aggression.
Despite most countries refusing to send aid to the Spanish Government many volunteers went over to fight in what they saw as a just cause. This included many celebrity artists and writers such as Earnest Hemingway and George Orwell. As a result there is a rich artistic record of the Spanish Civil War.

Looking at the photos proves how man has to ability to unleash havoc and war amongst others. It shows how people can join into groups and create a large war involving most of one country which is more than capable of spreading to others around it. America sent over volunteers to become involved in the civil war making it clear the incident was already becoming international. Forces from France and Italy also became involved, with Hitler backing up Franco. Nationalists versus Republicans. Some countries joined just to fight for their beliefs in the political matter at hand. With the introduction of heavy artillery being used, it was clear to see the destruction that can be caused by a fairly large war in one country and that the use of artillery would be able to escalate into something huge. It was common for bombings to occur at time even by Hitler (like foreshadowing the Blitzkrieg). With the poster of the swastika being crushed, it's almost like you can sense that Hitler may try and fight back that belief of Nazism being crushed. With the brigade flags, you could tell that the affair was coming to an international scale. Just due to the fact other countries became involved in Spain's crisis, some event on a larger international scale was inevitable.

Literally this war was crazy. I don't understand why no one delt with this. George Orwell talked about how people were going into churches and just burning any religious artifacts. Some reporters were talking about how nuns were raped and crucified in front of the reporters. like this is just completely inhuman how people did not think this was a problem. Reporters also said that Franco could be considered similar to Hitler and Mussolini but forsome reason was treated like he wasn't a threat. Bernard Knox stated that the powers of the world stated the were premature fascist. Like what does that mean.If you ask me it is just an excuse to not take part. Weapons technology that had never been seen before was now being used. Serious someone should be like why do we need this new technology, something must be happening pretty soon if the Nazi's are participating in a no name civil war.Eveyone hated the Jews. Even in America there was alot of racism. This beingdone everywhere made it so that no one really cared about persecuting of the Jews. Eddie Colon talked about
anarchistism, how the way it would be organized would allow oppressed groups to stand up for themselves in a sense. Although they want to create a classless system, really it is the most confusing ideas around. The brigade flags showed how people all around the world were beginning to get involved in affairs, and something at a much larger scale would soon come. People should figure the fighting would increase with people getting involved. Peter E. Newell talks about the effort of Buenaventura Durruti who sent his forces to Madrid foor relief but they were overwheld and died. The fact that 40000 troops would lose is sort of suspicious. There were also posters depicting the Nazi's must fall but nothing happened. Really our perdesessors were idiots for not doing anything and not seeing the war coming

It is hard to believe the atrocities and the carnage that was allowed to happen and the world stood by and watched. They must have known Hitler and his army were there fighing, them being there was in itself a violation of the treaty of Versilles. This watr was the place to be though and many went for the glory and the knowledge. They wrote books, took pictures and did paintings. The people back home appreciated the art and the stories but they didn't understand the true meaning of them. It was a fatal mistake that the youth of the twentieth century had to pay for.

This war was madness. The "civil" war turned into a "world" war. People from all over came to say they were in the war, but didn't know what they were getting themselves into. The citizens of the United States didn't understand the horror taking place in Spain. They appreciated the art and stories but did not understand the extent the soldiers went through. Churches, stores, and entire cities were defaced. They were covered with black flags and red flags. Orwell talked about nuns being raped in front of reporters. The horror goes on and on. I don't know if we as the people reading articles about this catastrophe can ever truly understand the extent those in this war went through.
